Imagine landscapes transforming before your eyes from lush rainforest to arid desert, spectacular alpine vistas to expansive prairie grasslands. Canada's railway links the east and west coasts of this massive country and is a fabulous way to take in the spectacular scenery Canada has to offer! The Canadian's route, from Vancouver to Toronto, is considered by many as one of the world's best train journeys but we would argue that other sections of the transcontinental route - from Vancouver all the way to Halifax - are equally as fascinating!
The train's interiors, while regularly refurbished, maintain the cutting-edge fifties decor, and the smartly dressed crew still announce dinner in person, rather than over the PA system. The train's elegant restaurant serves up gourmet meals of anything from prime rib of beef to pan-roasted halibut, plus wines to drink while the scenery unfolds before you.

Our most popular VIA Rail service - The Canadian. Vancouver to Toronto (4466km, 4 days) The Canadian departs late on the Vancouver-to-Toronto leg, so you will have to wait until morning to enjoy the scenery: see flashes of green pine trees, mountain peaks and dozens of river valleys and waterfalls. Try and spot animals like grazing elks and possibly grizzly bears. Train staff often announce sightings! The train passes through Jasper National Park and Mount Robson Provincial Park. Just before the town of Jasper, where there's a 'whistle stop', the route slides through the spectacular Yellowhead Pass whose crest forms the border between Alberta and British Columbia. This leg of the route has the best view of the train winding around the tracks, framed by mountain peaks and pine trees.
About three hours out of Jasper, the scenery changes significantly, when the train emerges into vast prairie land that continues for miles - across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Yellow canola flowers, hemp and flax form massive carpets of colour. Wooden grain elevators stand like track sentinels - striking landmarks against the flat landscape. Onward to Toronto, where the birch trees are replaced by maple trees, and there's lots of ponds and holiday cabins.
The journeys is made all the more special with attentive and courteous service. Meals are served in completely refurbished dining cars, where breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared for you by the onboard chef.
