This private tour is a week of stunning contrasts of the ancient and modern in Turkey's largest city and cultural capital, with the magical lunar landscape of Cappadocia and the fascinating history and culture of the former Commagene Kingdom.

Day 1: Istanbul Arrive in Istanbul with an escorted transfer to the hotel in the heart of the old city.

Day 2: Istanbul Sightseeing today includes the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia Museum, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Covered Bazaar.

Day 3: Istanbul > Cappadocia After a short flight to Kayseri enjoy a visit to the Goreme Open Air Museum, before continuing to the Devrent and Pasabagi (Monks) Valleys with fascinating rock formations and pinnacles. Stay in a cave hotel at no additional cost (optional).

Day 4: Cappadocia Drive to Kaymakli, then a moderate walk to Pigeon Valley, with hundreds of pigeon houses carved into fairy-chimneys. Look over Uchisar at the highest point in Cappadocia before a visit to the rock-hewn churches of Rose Valley.

Day 5: Cappadocia > Mount Nemrut Travel to Seljuk Karatayhan Caravanserai on the famous Silk Road, through the Taurus Mountains, with the opportunity to observe the countryside and everyday life of rural Turkey. After lunch enjoy an ice cream tasting in Kahramanmaras before continuing to Kahta.

Day 6: Mount Nemrut > Sanliurfa Early departure to Mount Nemrut, to see the sun rise between the colossal statues and heads. Continue to Arsemia, once the capital of the Commagene Kingdom. Cross the ancient Septimus Severus Bridge en route to Sanliurfa and Harran, visiting the Ataturk Dam, the largest dam in the Middle East. After lunch visit Abraham's Cave and the Pools of Holy Carp, then wander around the covered oriental bazaar and Gumrukhan. Finish the day in Harran, an ancient village of Mud-Brick "beehive" houses. Along with the area's Assyrian history, it is believed to be where biblical Abraham spent the last years of his life.

Day 7: Sanliurfa > Cappadocia After breakfast, depart to Birecik, famous for its bald-ibis (Kelaynak) birds; enjoy lunch and visit the breeding farm, before driving into the Taurus mountains back to Goreme.

Booking conditions

This is a private tour based on two people travelling together; single and triple prices are available on request. Please note that flight tickets are not included as domestic flights have flexible rates (ranging from US$60-$200 per sector) depending on the date of booking and availability. Sightseeing in Istanbul may be altered if attractions shut on the day you plan to visit. On the final day it is possible transfer to Sanliurfa or Gaziantep Airport (at additional cost) rather than return to Cappadocia.
